The Region

The Region of Pays d'Oc

Pays d'Oc is a regional Indication Géographique Protégée (IGP) in the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region of southern France. It covers a large geographical area spanning from Nîmes to Perpignan and Carcassonne. Pays d'Oc has gained a reputation for its versatility, offering a wide array of wines, grape varieties and winemaking styles. Its Mediterranean climate, diverse soils and commitment to quality have established Pays d'Oc as a significant player in the French wine industry. It represents almost 20% of the total French wine exports and accounts for 65% of French IGP production.

One of the key factors contributing to the success of Pays d'Oc is the wide range of grape varieties that thrive in the region. Both red and white grape varieties are grown here, including international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, as well as local varieties such as Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Vermentino, among others. This allows winemakers in Pays d'Oc to create a diverse portfolio of wines with different flavor profiles and styles. Pays d'Oc wines are known for their approachability, quality and value. The region's winemakers have been striving for continuous improvement in recent years, focusing on sustainable viticulture, precise winemaking techniques and expressing the unique terroir of the area with their wines.

The Region

The Region of Cotes de Gascogne

Côtes de Gascogne is a region in the southwest of France, situated between Bordeaux and the Spanish border. It is known for its diverse terroirs which contribute to the unique characteristics of the wines produced in the area. The western part of the Côtes de Gascogne region is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. This maritime influence results in mild summers and wet springs, creating a cooler and more humid climate compared to the eastern part. The sandy alluvial soils found in this area have good drainage, allowing excess water to flow through easily. On the other hand, the eastern part of the Côtes de Gascogne region enjoys a more continental climate. It experiences warmer summers with less rainfall compared to the western part. The soils in this area are predominantly composed of clay and limestone, which offer different characteristics to the wines produced there.

The variations in climate and soil composition across the Côtes de Gascogne region contribute to the diversity of grape varieties grown and the styles of wines produced. This region is particularly known for its white wines, which are often crisp, aromatic and refreshing, showcasing the unique qualities of the different terroirs within the area.
